Body Shape and Symptoms
From the desk of Dr. Sean Patterson
For years it has been said that the shape of your body can reveal quite a bit about your health, your metabolism
and how you should go about losing weight.
I absolutely agree with that. HOWEVER- the way I look at your body and its shape will be interpreted in a very
different and unique way.
For example: Through my training and studying, I have learned that there are 2 primary types of bodies I see in
my practice.
The first are those with very thin upper bodies and extremities, who have the “muffin top” kind of belly.
That is the belly fat that will not leave no matter how hard you work out. If you were only to gain a few
pounds, unwanted fat would be right around the waist. These are people that are extremely stressed out
internally. They usually have significant hormonal imbalances and exhibit Adrenal Fatigue symptoms. I have witnessed blood pressure problems, insomnia, hot
flashes, chronic pain and low energy. These people typically crave sugar and need caffeine to wake up.
The second bodies I see are those that gain weight all over. It is evenly distributed. These people usually have
large necks, arms, calves, etc. They usually have low thyroid function (hypothyroidism), but show “normal” on lab
work. These people have a lower body temperature (cold hands and feet), thinning, dry hair, and thin fingernails.
It is common that these people are chronically fatigued and almost seem depressed. Many of my patients with these
symptoms have been labeled with Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue.
